Kulgam, October 27,2025: In an inspiring story of self-reliance and grounded ambition, a PhD scholar from Kulgam district in South Kashmir has chosen an unconventional path — leaving a contractual job to start a dry fruit cart business. His decision reflects a growing trend among Kashmir’s educated youth who are embracing entrepreneurship and local business opportunities instead of chasing conventional employment.
The scholar, who holds a doctorate in social sciences, shared that his decision to start a small business stemmed from a desire to connect directly with people and understand the grassroots challenges of trade and livelihood. “Education gives us knowledge, but true learning comes from the ground. I wanted to experience the market myself,” he said.
Setting up his cart in a busy marketplace of Kulgam, he sells locally sourced almonds, walnuts, and dried apricots, attracting both regular customers and curious onlookers. What started as a small setup has now become a symbol of dignity in labor and entrepreneurial spirit among the region’s youth.
Local residents and social media users have praised his initiative, calling it a powerful message of self-respect, resilience, and practical learning. Many noted that such stories break stereotypes about educated youth being dependent solely on government jobs.
Officials in the District Administration Kulgam also lauded his move, stating that grassroots entrepreneurship contributes to the local economy and aligns with the government’s vision of promoting self-employment and youth empowerment in Jammu and Kashmir.
The scholar plans to expand his small business in the future, possibly venturing into online sales and connecting with dry fruit cooperatives across the Valley. “I don’t see this as a downgrade — I see it as a new chapter. Every business, big or small, teaches you something valuable,” he added.
His journey embodies the spirit of a New Kashmir — where education meets enterprise, and where young minds are redefining success through innovation, humility, and hands-on experience.
