Kashmir Ahead

Fresh snowfall covers Sonamarg heights

Srinagar, April 19, 2026-Fresh snowfall was recorded in the upper reaches of Sonamarg, turning the scenic mountain destination into a white landscape and causing a noticeable dip in temperatures across Kashmir.

According to officials, snowfall occurred on both sides of the Zojila Pass in the Sonamarg area of Ganderbal district. Similar weather activity was also reported in other higher-altitude regions, including Gurez Valley and along the Mughal Road.

The plains of the Kashmir Valley experienced light to moderate rainfall during the early hours, contributing further to the drop in daytime temperatures by a few degrees. Meteorological Department officials said the weather is expected to gradually improve later in the day.

However, the fresh spell of snow has disrupted normal life in several areas. Key routes, including the Srinagar–Kargil highway and other high-altitude roads, were temporarily closed due to accumulation of snow and slippery conditions, impacting vehicular movement.

Sonamarg, a prominent tourist destination known for its alpine meadows and glaciers, often witnesses such late-season snowfall due to its high altitude and mountainous terrain. The fresh snowfall has once again enhanced the region’s natural beauty, even as authorities remain alert to ensure road safety and restoration of connectivity.
