Jammu and Kashmir: Continuous heavy rainfall triggered flash floods in several parts of Bhaderwah and Doda districts on Wednesday, forcing residents to move to safer locations. The sudden rise in water levels caused damage to multiple houses, roads, and temples, leaving locals in panic.
According to officials, torrential rains over the past 24 hours led to overflowing streams and landslides in the region. Several residential houses, agricultural fields, and religious structures including temples in Bhaderwah and Doda suffered partial to severe damage. Local administration has evacuated families from vulnerable areas to temporary shelters.
“Safety of the people is our priority. Teams have been deployed for rescue and relief. Essential supplies are being arranged,” a district official said.
Eyewitnesses reported that strong currents washed away boundary walls, livestock sheds, and small bridges. In some areas, electricity and water supply have also been disrupted.
The Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority (JKDMA) has issued an alert for further landslides and flash floods in hilly areas, urging residents to avoid traveling near rivers, nallahs, and landslide-prone zones.
Meanwhile, volunteers and local NGOs have stepped in to provide food, water, and medical aid to affected families. Authorities are assessing the total damage to property and religious sites.
Bhaderwah and Doda, known for their scenic valleys and cultural heritage, are among the worst-hit regions in the Chenab Valley. Experts say the increasing frequency of flash floods highlights the growing impact of climate change in Jammu and Kashmir.
