Jammu, June 16, 2025 – The CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (IIIM) in Jammu conducted a comprehensive Fire and Lab Safety training session on June 14, 2025, aimed at enhancing safety awareness and preparedness among its staff and researchers. The program, held at the institute’s Jammu campus, featured hands-on fire extinguisher drills, expert-led discussions, and the appointment of a dedicated Safety Champion to oversee ongoing safety initiatives. The event also marked the launch of new institute-wide safety protocols to ensure a secure working environment in its laboratories.
Organised in collaboration with fire safety experts and local authorities, the training focused on equipping participants with practical skills to handle fire emergencies and laboratory hazards. Scientists, technical staff, and students engaged in live demonstrations of fire extinguisher use, learning techniques to combat small fires effectively. The session also covered critical lab safety practices, including handling hazardous chemicals, maintaining equipment, and adhering to emergency evacuation procedures.
Dr. Zabeer Ahmed, Director of CSIR-IIIM Jammu, emphasised the importance of proactive safety measures, stating, “Our laboratories are hubs of innovation, but safety is paramount. This training empowers our team to work confidently while prioritising their well-being.” A key highlight was the appointment of a Safety Champion, tasked with monitoring compliance and fostering a culture of safety across the institute. The newly launched protocols include regular safety audits, updated emergency response plans, and mandatory training for all personnel.
The initiative received positive feedback on social media, with posts highlighting the institute’s commitment to fostering a safe research environment. This training aligns with CSIR-IIIM’s broader mission to advance scientific discovery while ensuring the highest standards of workplace safety, particularly in high-risk laboratory settings.
