Baramulla, December 6,2025: Archaeologists have uncovered extensive remains of a major Buddhist complex at Zehanpora, marking a significant addition to Jammu & Kashmir’s cultural and historical landscape. The excavation, carried out jointly by the J&K Department of Archives, Archaeology and Museums and the Centre of Central Asian Studies (CCAS), University of Kashmir, has revealed structural remnants believed to date back to an important phase of the region’s Buddhist heritage.
Officials noted that the discovery highlights Baramulla’s ancient cultural links and adds valuable insights into the spread of Buddhism across North Kashmir. The ongoing excavation aims to further document artefacts, architectural patterns, and cultural imprints that could reshape the understanding of early settlement systems in the area.
Experts from both institutions are continuing detailed studies, with the findings expected to contribute significantly to archaeological research and heritage preservation initiatives in J&K.
