Kathua, May 22,2026- In a remarkable example of rural entrepreneurship and self-reliance, former serviceman Parveen Singh has established a turmeric and spices processing unit in Sultanpur village of Marheen Block in Kathua district under the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme.
The initiative is emerging as a major boost for local farmers and unemployed youth in the border region, while also promoting agri-based industries in Jammu and Kashmir. Supported by the Agriculture and Industries departments, the unit received financial assistance and subsidy benefits under the Prime Minister Rozgar Yojana.
Parveen Singh invested nearly ₹1 crore to set up the processing facility equipped with modern machinery for turmeric grinding, spice processing, packaging, and value addition. The unit is helping farmers get better returns for their produce while reducing dependence on outside markets.
Speaking about the venture, Singh said his aim was not only to build a successful business but also to create employment opportunities for local youth and encourage them to explore agriculture-based entrepreneurship instead of migrating in search of jobs.
The processing unit has already started generating livelihood opportunities for several people in the area, especially women and small farmers associated with turmeric cultivation and spice farming. Local residents have appreciated the initiative, calling it an inspiration for border villages looking to become economically self-reliant.
Officials said the ODOP scheme is playing a key role in promoting unique agricultural products from different districts by supporting farmers, startups, and small entrepreneurs with financial aid, training, and market linkages.
The success story of Parveen Singh reflects the changing rural economy of Jammu and Kashmir, where ex-servicemen and young entrepreneurs are increasingly adopting modern agri-business models to create jobs and strengthen local economies.
