Empowering Anganwadi workers and mothers

In a significant effort to enhance public health in Bandipora district, Jammu and Kashmir, Anganwadi workers and lactating mothers across various Anganwadi Centres are being sensitised about safe drinking water, proper sanitation, hygiene maintenance, and food safety. These awareness programs, conducted in collaboration with health and child development departments, aim to empower communities with practical knowledge to prevent waterborne diseases, improve sanitation, and ensure safer food practices.

The sessions emphasize the importance of accessing clean drinking water to protect against illnesses like diarrhoea and cholera, particularly for young children and mothers. Participants learn methods such as boiling water, using filters, and proper storage to maintain water safety. Proper sanitation is another focus, with guidance on maintaining clean surroundings, using toilets, and managing waste to curb health risks. Hygiene maintenance, including regular handwashing and clean food preparation, is highlighted to safeguard infants and families from infections. Additionally, food safety training covers safe handling, storage, and cooking practices to prevent foodborne illnesses and support nutrition under the Integrated Child Development Services scheme.

Anganwadi workers, key grassroots educators, are being equipped to guide families effectively, while lactating mothers gain insights into protecting their children’s health. A participant noted, “Learning to store water and maintain hygiene has been eye-opening for me and my family’s safety.” The initiative, aligned with Swachh Bharat Mission and Poshan Abhiyaan, plans to expand to more AWCs, incorporating topics like maternal nutrition. Regular monitoring will ensure lasting impact.

By promoting safe drinking water, sanitation, hygiene, and food safety, Bandipora’s AWCs are fostering healthier communities, setting a foundation for improved health outcomes across the district.
