Earthquake of magnitude 2.4 strikes Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir

KISHTWAR, April 16, 2025: A mild earthquake measuring 2.4 on the Richter scale struck Kishtwar district in Jammu and Kashmir early Wednesday morning, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The tremor occurred at approximately 5:14 AM Indian Standard Time (IST), with its epicenter located at Latitude 33.18 N and Longitude 75.89 E, at a shallow depth of 5 kilometers.

The NCS shared details of the seismic event on X, stating, “EQ of M: 2.4, On: 16/04/2025 05:14:52 IST, Lat: 33.18 N, Long: 75.89 E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Kishtwar, Jammu & Kashmir.” No reports of casualties or damage to property have been recorded, as the earthquake was of low intensity.

Kishtwar, located in the seismically active Chenab Valley, is no stranger to earthquakes, with the region classified under high-risk seismic zones. Experts emphasize the importance of earthquake-resistant construction in such areas to minimize potential damage from future tremors.
