Drums of dawn: Sehar Khans awaken Kashmir for Ramadan

Srinagar, Kashmir – March 2, 2025 – As the holy month of Ramadan begins across Kashmir, the rhythmic beats of drums echo through the pre-dawn streets, signaling the start of a centuries-old tradition. The Sehar Khans, traditional drummers, are once again taking up their roles to wake Muslims for Sehri, the pre-dawn meal that sustains them through the day’s fast.

This age-old custom, deeply rooted in Kashmiri culture, sees these drummers walking through neighborhoods, their steady drumming cutting through the stillness of the early hours. For many in the valley, the sound is a comforting call to prayer and preparation, blending spirituality with tradition.

Ramadan officially began in Kashmir on Sunday, March 2, following the sighting of the crescent moon, as confirmed by local religious authorities. The Sehar Khans, whose name derives from Sehar (dawn), have been a fixture of the month-long observance for generations, ensuring the faithful rise in time to eat and pray before the fast begins at sunrise.
“It’s more than just waking people up,” said Mohammad Ashraf, a Sehar Khan from Srinagar. “It’s about keeping our heritage alive and uniting the community during this blessed month.”

As Kashmiris observe Ramadan amidst the serene beauty of the valley, the Sehar Khans remain a vital thread in the tapestry of local customs, their drums a timeless reminder of faith and resilience.
