SRINAGAR, DECEMBER 10: The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Srinagar, in collaboration with DLSA Budgam and under the aegis of the J&K Legal Services Authority, observed ‘World Human Rights Day’ at Central Jail Srinagar. The event aimed to raise awareness among inmates about human rights and the significance of legal aid in protecting these rights.
The program was held under the guidance of Jaffer Hussain Beg, Chairman DLSA and Principal District & Sessions Judge Srinagar, and Om Prakash Baghat, Chairman DLSA Budgam and Principal District & Sessions Judge Budgam, with the supervision of Nusrat Ali Hakak, Sub-Judge and Secretary of DLSA Srinagar.
In her address, Nusrat Ali Hakak emphasized the importance of World Human Rights Day in promoting dignity, equality, and justice for all. She encouraged inmates to understand their rights and actively engage with the legal system to safeguard those rights, stressing the role of the legal framework in ensuring justice for every individual.
Shahbaz Hussain Bhat, DySP Central Jail, underscored the universality of human rights, emphasizing that these rights must be upheld even within correctional facilities. He highlighted the importance of maintaining dignity, fairness, and respect for the fundamental rights of every individual, regardless of their circumstances.
Resource persons Tasneem Kausar, Deputy Chief Legal Aid Defence Counsel, and Urba Rashid, Assistant Legal Aid Defence Counsel, led educational sessions for the inmates. They provided valuable information on human rights, the role of legal aid, and the available mechanisms for addressing grievances.
The event underscored DLSA’s continued commitment to ensuring access to justice for all individuals, including those in incarceration, and reinforced the importance of legal awareness in safeguarding human rights.
