Devotees flood Mata Vaishno Devi temple as Navratri begins

Katra, Jammu & Kashmir – March 30, 2025-On the auspicious first day of Chaitra Navratri, the Mata Vaishno Devi Mandir in Katra, Jammu & Kashmir, witnessed a massive influx of devotees eager to offer their prayers. The temple, nestled atop the Trikuta hills, was adorned with vibrant flowers and lights, creating a divine ambiance as pilgrims arrived to seek blessings from Goddess Durga. Today, devotees worshipped Maa Shailaputri, the first of the nine forms of the goddess celebrated during the nine-day festival.

The shrine captured visuals of long queues of pilgrims chanting “Jai Mata Di,” their devotion palpable despite the challenging trek to the sacred cave. The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board ensured elaborate arrangements, including enhanced security measures at the base camp in Katra, to accommodate the thousands expected during this holy period. Local authorities reported a significant turnout, with many devotees arriving from across India to mark the start of the Hindu New Year festivities.

Chaitra Navratri, one of the four Navratris observed annually, holds special significance as it aligns with the spring season and culminates in Ram Navami. Each day honours a distinct incarnation of Goddess Durga, with Maa Shailaputri—symbolising strength and nature—being revered on the opening day. The festival will continue until April 7, drawing millions to temples nationwide, with Mata Vaishno Devi remaining a focal point of spiritual fervour.
