JAMMU, JANUARY 20: Deputy Chief Minister, Shri Surinder Kumar Choudhary, inaugurated the “Sale Mela of Wool and Silk Products,” organised by Jammu and Kashmir Industries (JKI). The event, which showcases an extensive range of locally crafted wool and silk products, aims to promote the region’s indigenous handicrafts both nationally and internationally.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, the Deputy Chief Minister highlighted the rich diversity of Jammu and Kashmir’s handicrafts, emphasising the need for sustained efforts in marketing and promotion to ensure their broader recognition. “Jammu and Kashmir is blessed with a wide array of indigenous handicrafts that have already carved a niche in national and international markets. By promoting these crafts, we can create greater market opportunities, thereby boosting the local economy and generating employment,” he said.
The Deputy Chief Minister commended JKI for organising the Sale Mela, calling it a reflection of the skill and creativity of local artisans and workers, particularly in the field of Mulberry Silk. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting local industries and artisans, noting that the necessary mechanisms are in place to foster industrial growth and market expansion. “The government is dedicated to ensuring sustainable livelihoods for sheep wool rearers, sericulturists, and artisans, while also expanding their market reach,” he added.
Shri Choudhary further directed JKI to explore the possibility of organising similar events at prominent locations both within and outside the Union Territory to showcase the region’s unique heritage products.
The Sale Mela, which has already received a warm response from employees at the Civil Secretariat, will continue for the next 10 days, offering exclusive discounts and special promotions to encourage public participation and support for the region’s traditional crafts.
