BARAMULLA, JULY 30: In a heartfelt tribute to a national hero, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Baramulla, Minga Sherpa, today visited the remote village of Naribal in Rafiabad to honour the valour and supreme sacrifice of Lance Naik Ghulam Mohammad Khan, a Vir Chakra awardee who laid down his life during the Kargil War.
Accompanied by Additional Deputy Commissioner Sopore, S.A. Raina, and senior district officers, the DC paid homage at the martyr’s residence and interacted with his family. The officers expressed deep respect for the courage and dedication of Lance Naik Khan, who attained martyrdom on June 7, 1999, during Operation Vijay at Point 5203 in the Kargil sector after eliminating multiple enemy combatants in an act of extraordinary bravery.
To immortalise his legacy, DC Sherpa announced two major initiatives: the Government Middle School in Naribal will be renamed after Lance Naik Ghulam Mohammad Khan, and a memorial gate will be constructed in his honour on the Shalkote–Naribal road.
The visit also doubled as a significant public outreach effort. A large number of residents assembled to voice long-standing issues, including lack of road connectivity, poor drinking water supply, erratic power infrastructure, limited healthcare access, and inadequate school facilities.
Responding with empathy and commitment, the DC patiently heard the grievances and issued on-the-spot instructions to officials from the PHE, PWD, Power, Health, and Education departments for immediate redressal. He assured the people that the district administration is
