Baramulla, September 8, 2025: Deputy Commissioner (DC) Baramulla, Minga Sherpa , conducted a comprehensive field visit to flood-prone areas in Sopore Sub-division, including Warapora, Mahrajpora, Haritaar, and adjoining regions, to assess vulnerabilities along the River Jhelum and Wular Lake. Accompanied by a team of officers, including Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Sopore, Shabir Ahmad Raina, the DC inspected bunds and waterlogged locations to evaluate the district’s preparedness amid recent heavy rainfall forecasts.During the visit, DC Sherpa affirmed that there is no immediate threat to communities, stating, “The situation is under control with no alarming concerns.” He noted minor waterlogging in parts of Warapora due to rising water levels in Wular Lake but reassured that residential areas, including Haritaar, remain safe.
The DC highlighted proactive measures by the District Administration, including the immediate strengthening of weak embankments to protect habitations.Sherpa urged residents not to panic, emphasising that the administration is closely monitoring water levels in the River Jhelum, Wular Lake, and other water bodies. He directed departments to maintain close coordination and mobilise resources, including emergency teams, to ensure a timely response to any eventuality.
The administration has also issued an advisory for residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas to remain cautious, avoid deep waters, safeguard children, elderly persons, and livestock, and stay updated through official sources.The DC confirmed that essential services, including roads, power supply, and public infrastructure, remain fully operational across the district. Collaborative efforts between the administration and local communities were underscored as vital for safeguarding lives and properties against adverse weather conditions.The field visit follows a forecast of heavy rainfall that could elevate water levels, prompting the administration to prioritize preparedness and resilience. DC Sherpa reiterated the administration’s commitment to the safety and well-being of Sopore’s communities, particularly in vulnerable areas near the River Jhelum and Wular Lake.
