Baramulla, April 11, 2025: Deputy Commissioner (DC) Baramulla, Minga Sherpa, chaired a crucial meeting to review the proposed alignment of the Sopore-Kupwara railway line, a significant infrastructure project aimed at enhancing connectivity in north Kashmir. The discussion focused on adopting a balanced approach to ensure development while minimizing the impact on horticultural land and existing structures.
The meeting, attended by key officials including Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Sopore, Shabir Ahmad Raina, ADC Baramulla, Syed Altaf Hussain Musvi, senior engineers, and consultants from Northern Railway, along with district revenue officers, highlighted the importance of sustainable development. DC Sherpa emphasized that the railway line’s alignment has been meticulously planned to avoid disruption to the region’s vital horticultural sector, a cornerstone of the local economy, and to preserve existing infrastructure to the greatest extent possible.
The Sopore-Kupwara railway line is expected to boost regional connectivity, facilitate smoother transportation, and contribute to the socio-economic upliftment of the area. By connecting remote areas of Kupwara with Sopore and beyond, the project aims to enhance access to markets, education, and healthcare, fostering overall growth in the region.
DC Sherpa directed the concerned departments to ensure thorough consultations with local stakeholders to address any concerns regarding land use and environmental impact. He stressed the need for transparency and efficiency in the planning process to maintain public trust and support for the project.
This railway line is part of broader efforts to expand rail connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, aligning with the region’s developmental goals. The careful consideration of horticultural land underscores the administration’s commitment to balancing infrastructure development with the preservation of livelihoods and natural resources
