BARAMULLA, June 12, 2025 — Deputy Commissioner (DC) Baramulla, Minga Sherpa, conducted a detailed inspection of Gulmarg’s tourist infrastructure on June 11, 2025, focusing on Gondola operations, ticketing systems, sanitation, and visitor amenities to ensure a safe, efficient, and memorable experience for tourists. The visit reflects Baramulla’s dedication to strengthening Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism sector, with Gulmarg, a globally renowned ski and summer destination, at the forefront of these efforts.
Sherpa evaluated the Gulmarg Gondola, Asia’s highest cable car, which transports visitors to Kongdori (Phase I) and Apharwat (Phase II). Following a technical disruption on January 26, 2025, Sherpa reviewed safety measures and operational upgrades, including an expanded online ticketing system offering 5,000 daily slots and a new tatkal booking option to manage peak crowds. These enhancements aim to improve accessibility and streamline visitor flow.
Sanitation was a key focus, with Sherpa directing authorities to uphold strict cleanliness standards across Gulmarg, particularly addressing waste management at high-altitude sites like Apharwat and Kongdoori. The DC also assessed parking and traffic arrangements between Tangmarg and Gulmarg, pushing for optimized parking zones and public transport to ease congestion, especially in anticipation of the Khelo India Winter Games 2025.
“Gulmarg must deliver a world-class experience that leaves visitors wanting to return,” Sherpa emphasized, calling for seamless coordination among departments. The inspection follows a challenging period after the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives and impacted tourism. However, Gulmarg’s resilience was evident with 7,299 Gondola riders on April 23, supported by enhanced security from J&K Police and the Border Security Force.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah praised the initiative, tying it to broader tourism revival efforts. “We’re committed to ensuring every visitor leaves Kashmir with unforgettable memories,” he said, citing events like the recent Shikara Show on Dal Lake and the promotion of destinations like Nagwari in Kupwara. Sherpa’s efforts align with preparations for the Amarnath Yatra 2025, reinforcing Gulmarg’s role as a safe and welcoming hub.
Sherpa’s proactive leadership, seen in initiatives like the DAJGUA IEC campaign for tribal communities, underscores Baramulla’s commitment to inclusive development. With tourism contributing 7% to J&K’s GDP in 2024, Gulmarg’s enhanced facilities under Sherpa’s oversight are poised to boost its global appeal, offering visitors a blend of natural beauty and modern amenities.
