BARAMULLA, JANUARY 20: Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Minga Sherpa, chaired a meeting of the District Level Coordination Committee under the National Tobacco Control Programme to review the enforcement of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act in the district.
The meeting focused on discussing strategies to enhance tobacco control efforts and strengthen the implementation of COTPA regulations in Baramulla. The DC stressed the importance of ensuring a tobacco-free environment, especially in public spaces and around educational institutions.
Key directives issued during the meeting included regular inspections by enforcement teams, particularly around a 100-meter radius of schools and colleges, to prevent the sale and consumption of tobacco products. The DC also emphasiSed the need for all public offices to prominently display ‘No Smoking’ signage and maintain smoke-free premises.
Further, Minga Sherpa outlined plans for conducting weekly awareness drives in public spaces to educate the community about the dangers of tobacco use. Awareness campaigns will also be integrated into school assemblies to inform students about the harmful effects of tobacco and the legal provisions of COTPA.
The meeting concluded with a commitment from all stakeholders to collaborate and intensify efforts to create a healthier, tobacco-free Baramulla. The District Administration reaffirmed its dedication to closely monitoring the implementation of tobacco control laws and ensuring strict adherence for the well-being of the community.
