The Khelo India Water Sports Festival has brought new energy and excitement to Jammu & Kashmir. For the very first time, such a grand water sports event has been organised on the beautiful Dal Lake in Srinagar, giving athletes and visitors a chance to witness not only thrilling competitions but also the rich cultural heritage of Kashmir. Artists, such as groups playing the traditional shehnai, expressed their happiness at being part of the festival. They believe that opportunities like this allow people from outside the state to experience Kashmir’s culture, music, food, and handicrafts. Evening programs and cultural performances add to the festive atmosphere, showing visitors the unique traditions of the valley. This water sports festival is being organised by the J&K Sports Council with support from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, in coordination with the J&K Government. After the successful conduct of the Khelo India Winter Games, the ministry was kind enough to grant this event to Jammu & Kashmir. The festival has attracted around 800 athletes from 28 states, union territories, and different sports boards. Proper arrangements for their accommodation, food, technical conduct, and ceremonies have been made by the government. Athletes, many of whom have been practicing for years, feel that this event will provide a major boost to water sports in the region. Competitions include 1000-meter heats, repêchage, and finals spread over three days, from August 21 to 23. Participants are not only competing but also learning from athletes across India. For many, this is their first visit to Kashmir, and they are amazed by the scenic beauty of Dal Lake and its surroundings. They believe that such festivals should be held regularly in Jammu & Kashmir, as they encourage youth participation in sports and also boost tourism and cultural pride. The festival is not just about competition—it is also about promoting culture, local food, crafts, tourism, and heritage. It is the first vertical of Khelo India where the host state has been given the opportunity to showcase its culture alongside sports. The message from the organisers and athletes is clear: youth should engage more in sports, make use of government policies and facilities, and stay away from drugs or antisocial activities. Sports provide a positive path for discipline, health, and national integration. The Khelo India Water Sports Festival is therefore a historic and proud moment for Kashmir, bringing together culture, tourism, and athletics under one platform, and promising a brighter future for youth through sports.
