Srinagar, January 6, 2026- Light snowfall was recorded in the higher reaches of Kashmir on Sunday, while the plains experienced dry weather, leading to a further intensification of the cold wave across the Valley. The fresh spell of snow has caused temperatures to dip sharply, with night temperatures remaining well below the seasonal average.
According to meteorological officials, upper areas including Gulmarg, Sonmarg, and parts of Kupwara and Gurez received light snowfall, while Srinagar and other low-lying areas witnessed chilly conditions accompanied by cold winds. The prolonged cold spell has resulted in freezing nights and icy mornings, disrupting daily life in several parts of the Valley.
Residents reported frozen water supply lines and icy roads in the early hours, while authorities have advised people to take precautions amid the severe cold. The ongoing cold wave has also led to an increase in demand for heating devices and warm clothing.
Meteorological Department officials said the weather is expected to remain cold over the next few days, with the possibility of intermittent snowfall in higher reaches and continued sub-zero temperatures in the plains. The situation is being closely monitored as Kashmir continues to experience peak winter conditions during Chillai Kalan, the harshest phase of winter.
