Srinagar ,November 18,2025: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has approved a major welfare package worth over ₹30 crore aimed at improving the living and working conditions of construction workers in Jammu and Kashmir. The sanctions mark a significant step toward strengthening labour protections, social security benefits, and safety standards for one of the largest workforce groups in the Union Territory.
According to officials, the funds will be channelled through the J&K Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board, enabling enhanced assistance in areas such as healthcare support, education scholarships, financial aid, and social welfare schemes for registered labourers. The initiative also focuses on improving access to safety equipment, insurance coverage, and skill development programmes.
CM Omar emphasised that construction workers form the backbone of infrastructure development in J&K and deserve robust welfare mechanisms. He noted that the sanctioned amount will help ensure timely delivery of benefits and strengthen the welfare board’s outreach across districts.
The government plans to fast-track various initiatives, including maternity benefits, disability support, pension schemes, and emergency assistance for labourers working in high-risk environments. Officials added that efforts are underway to simplify registration processes and bring more workers under formal welfare coverage.
Labour unions and workers’ representatives welcomed the move, calling it a “timely intervention” that will significantly uplift the socio-economic conditions of thousands of families dependent on the construction sector.
The latest sanction reflects the government’s broader push to improve labour welfare, enhance worker safety, and promote inclusive development in Jammu and Kashmir.
