CM Omar calls for artificial snow to boost Gulmarg as Global Ski hub

Srinagar, February 24,2026 – Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has called for the introduction of artificial snow-making facilities in Gulmarg to strengthen its position as a premier global ski destination.

Highlighting Gulmarg’s growing reputation among winter sports enthusiasts, the Chief Minister emphasized the need for advanced infrastructure to ensure a longer and more reliable skiing season, particularly in view of changing weather patterns and inconsistent snowfall.

Gulmarg, known for its world-class slopes and the renowned Gulmarg Gondola, attracts thousands of domestic and international tourists every year. However, officials have noted that unpredictable snowfall in recent seasons has affected winter tourism and related economic activity.

The proposed artificial snow system would help maintain ski slopes during lean snowfall periods, ensuring uninterrupted training and competitions. Experts believe the move could significantly enhance Gulmarg’s appeal for international skiing events and adventure tourism.

The Chief Minister also stressed the importance of sustainable tourism practices while upgrading infrastructure, ensuring environmental balance alongside economic growth.
