Ganderbal, November 7,2025:The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, has approved a ₹19.99 crore ‘Used Water Management Project’ (UWMP) for Ganderbal district, marking a significant step towards strengthening urban sanitation, environmental protection, and sustainable water management in the region.
The ambitious project, sanctioned under the *Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0, includes the *construction of a state-of-the-art Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Ganderbal town. The facility will focus on the scientific treatment and recycling of used water, thereby reducing pollution and protecting local water bodies from contamination.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said the project reflects the government’s commitment to clean rivers, improved sanitation, and better public health outcomes.
“We are determined to build a cleaner, greener Ganderbal. The Used Water Management Project will not only safeguard our rivers but also create a healthier environment for residents,” the CM remarked.
Officials from the Urban Development Department said that the ₹19.99 crore outlay will cover civil works, modern treatment infrastructure, and technology integration for efficient wastewater management. The project is also expected to generate local employment during the construction phase.
Environmental experts welcomed the move, stating that the UWMP will play a crucial role in reducing untreated wastewater discharge into the Sindh River, a key tributary of the Jhelum. They also highlighted the potential for reuse of treated water in landscaping, agriculture, and other non-potable purposes.
The Ganderbal administration has been directed to ensure *timely execution and adherence to environmental standards. Once completed, the project is expected to set a *benchmark for sustainable urban development in smaller towns of Jammu and Kashmir.
