Budgam Admin activates 6 rescue centres for flood-affected families

Budgam, September 4, 2025 – In a proactive measure to safeguard the lives and properties of residents amid severe flooding triggered by a breach in the River Jhelum bund, the District Administration Budgam has activated six dedicated rescue centres. The centres, strategically located in key educational institutions across affected areas, are fully equipped to provide shelter, food, medical aid, and other essential facilities for displaced families. This swift action underscores the administration’s commitment to emergency response and disaster management in the face of natural calamities. The activation of these rescue centres comes in the wake of heavy inundation reported in several villages, including Shalina, Rakh Shalina, and Baghi Shakirshah, following the bund breach early on September 3. Hundreds of residents have been evacuated as a precautionary measure, with the district administration mobilizing comprehensive relief efforts. “To ensure the safety of every resident, facilities are put in place by Budgam admin for affected families,” stated an official spokesperson, emphasizing the round-the-clock operations underway.

Key Rescue Centres Activated

The six rescue centres, all housed in prominent schools to leverage existing infrastructure, are as follows:

  • GHS Wagoora (Government High School Wagoora): Serving as a primary hub for immediate shelter and basic amenities in the Wagoora area.
  • GHSS Khandah (Government Higher Secondary School Khandah): Equipped for larger groups, providing medical check-ups and food distribution.
  • Sheikh-ul-Alam HS Wagoora (Sheikh-ul-Alam Higher Secondary School Wagoora): Focused on family reunification and child care services.
  • GHSS BK Pora (Government Higher Secondary School Budgam Khanda Pora): Handling evacuees from low-lying areas with temporary bedding and sanitation facilities.
  • Islamic Public HS Kralpora (Islamic Public Higher Secondary School Kralpora): Offering culturally sensitive support, including prayer spaces and community counseling.
  • Dar-ul-Fatah Dangerpora: A specialized centre for vulnerable groups, ensuring access to rescue operations and psychological support.

These centres have been stocked with essential supplies such as blankets, cooked meals, drinking water, and first-aid kits. The administration has also coordinated with local NGOs and volunteers to enhance on-ground support.

Robust Relief and Rescue Operations

Multi-agency teams, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Jammu and Kashmir Police, and revenue officials, have been deployed to the flood-hit zones. “Our entire manpower and machinery is on the ground,” the district administration assured in an official handout. Rescue operations are being led by trained personnel, with boats and heavy equipment deployed to reach isolated areas. Citizens are urged to cooperate with evacuation protocols and avoid flood-prone zones. The inundation has been attributed to relentless rainfall over the past week, exacerbating the River Jhelum’s flow and leading to the bund breach near affected villages. While no casualties have been reported so far, the situation remains fluid, with continuous monitoring in place. The district administration has appealed to residents to stay vigilant, follow advisories, and refrain from panic. “All necessary measures are being taken to ensure safety and protection of life and property,” the statement added.

Broader Context and Precautions

Budgam district, located adjacent to Srinagar, is particularly vulnerable to flooding due to its proximity to the Jhelum River. Similar incidents in the past have highlighted the need for resilient infrastructure, and the current response demonstrates lessons learned from previous disasters. The administration is also coordinating with the state government for additional resources, including potential airlifts if required.Affected families are advised to contact the nearest rescue centre or the district helpline (01951-280101) for assistance. Updates on the situation will be shared via official channels, including social media and local media outlets. This activation of rescue centres by the Budgam admin not only provides immediate relief but also reinforces community resilience in the face of climate-induced challenges. As operations continue, the focus remains on restoring normalcy while prioritizing the well-being of every resident.
