Poonch, May 22, 2025 – The Border Security Force (BSF) Rajouri unit demonstrated exemplary humanitarian efforts by extending critical relief to villagers in the Line of Control (LoC) areas of Loran Valley, District Poonch, who were severely affected by Pakistani shelling during Operation Sindoor. The initiative, carried out on May 21, 2025, brought hope and essential support to families grappling with the aftermath of cross-border hostilities.
The BSF troops distributed essential items including food supplies, clothing, and other necessities to the affected families, offering much-needed relief and support. The operation was a response to the intense shelling that rocked Poonch and neighboring Rajouri districts following India’s Operation Sindoor, a military campaign launched on May 7, 2025, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in retaliation to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives.
The shelling, which occurred between May 7 and 10, resulted in significant loss of life and property, with Poonch being among the worst-hit areas. Reports indicate that 27 civilians and nine security personnel were killed, with dozens injured and nearly 200 homes and shops damaged across Poonch and Rajouri. The BSF’s timely intervention aimed to alleviate the distress of villagers, many of whom had fled to safer areas during the conflict.
A local resident expressed gratitude, stating, “The BSF’s support has brought hope to our community. Their efforts show their commitment not only to our security but also to our well-being during these challenging times.” The initiative also included medical aid, with the Indian Army’s Romeo Force providing assistance to those injured in the shelling in nearby areas like Mankote.
The BSF’s humanitarian gesture underscores their dual role as protectors of India’s borders and caregivers to its citizens. Posts on X echoed this sentiment, with users praising the BSF for their “commendable act” and “unwavering commitment” to both security and humanitarian efforts. The relief operation has strengthened the bond of trust between the security forces and the local community, reinforcing the BSF’s role in fostering resilience in border areas.
As life slowly returns to normal in Poonch following a ceasefire agreement on May 10, 2025, the BSF’s efforts highlight the importance of compassion and solidarity in times of crisis. The Indian Army also neutralized 42 unexploded Pakistani shells in Poonch on May 18, ensuring civilian safety and facilitating the return to normalcy.
