BRO reopens Zojila Pass in record time, boosting connectivity between Ladakh and Kashmir valley

Srinagar, April 01, 2025 – The Border Roads Organisation has achieved a remarkable feat by reopening the Zojila Pass, a critical high-altitude mountain pass, in a record-breaking 33 days. This swift action has restored uninterrupted connectivity between Ladakh and the Kashmir Valley, significantly enhancing access for civilians, security forces, and economic activities in the region.

The Zojila Pass, located at an elevation of 11,643 feet in the Kargil district, is a vital link on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway. Known as the “mountain pass of blizzards,” it typically faces closure for months due to heavy snowfall and harsh winter conditions. However, the BRO’s relentless efforts under Project Vijayak and Project Beacon have slashed the closure duration from an average of 160-180 days to just over a month this year.

The reopening was officially marked today with a ceremonial flagging-off of the first convoy from the Srinagar side to Kargil. The event was attended by prominent dignitaries, including Ladakh MP Haji Hanifa Jan, Director General Border Roads Lt Gen Raghu Srinivasan, and Corps Commanders of 14 Corps and 15 Corps. Lt Gen Srinivasan praised the dedication of BRO personnel, stating, “This achievement reflects our commitment to establishing all-weather connectivity to Ladakh, ensuring seamless transportation and boosting the region’s economy.”

The BRO deployed advanced machinery and teams to clear snow between March 17-20, overcoming sub-zero temperatures, avalanches, and oxygen scarcity. This year’s reopening surpasses last year’s record of 68 days, highlighting the organisation’s growing efficiency in tackling one of the world’s most challenging terrains.
