Bhaderwah beckons : Tourists flock to scenic paradise

Bhaderwah, April 29, 2025 – Bhaderwah, a picturesque town in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district, is experiencing a surge in tourist arrivals as visitors flock to marvel at its stunning landscapes and serene charm. Dubbed “Mini Kashmir,” Bhaderwah’s snow-draped mountains, verdant meadows, and rich cultural heritage are cementing its status as a premier travel destination, drawing adventurers and nature lovers from across India.

The recent reopening of the Bhaderwah-Basholi-Pathankot National Highway has significantly improved access, fuelling a tourism boom. The star attraction, Guldanda meadow at 10,000 feet, has captivated visitors with its fresh snowfall and breathtaking vistas, earning comparisons to Switzerland and Himachal’s popular retreats. Tourists are thronging to Guldanda for skiing, snowboarding, and other winter activities introduced by the local administration to elevate Bhaderwah’s appeal. “This place is magical—snow so pure and views straight out of a postcard,” said Priya Sharma, a tourist from Delhi. Another visitor, Anil Kumar from Punjab, remarked, “It’s more beautiful than Manali, and the peace here is unmatched.”

Beyond its winter allure, Bhaderwah offers year-round attractions. The Bhal Padri meadow, fringed by dense forests and wildflowers, is a trekker’s paradise, while the Chattergala Pass at 10,500 feet delivers panoramic views that leave visitors spellbound. The ancient Gupt Ganga Temple, nestled along the Neeru River, adds a spiritual dimension, and vibrant local festivals showcase Bhaderwah’s cultural richness. These elements combine to make the town a versatile destination for nature enthusiasts, adventure seekers, and cultural explorers alike.

Local authorities have played a pivotal role in promoting Bhaderwah’s tourism potential. The Winter Festival 2024 highlighted the region’s scenic splendor and traditions, while the introduction of skiing at Guldanda has drawn significant crowds. “Seeing tourists enjoy skiing here feels like a milestone for Bhaderwah,” said Mohammad Asif, a local guide. Deputy Commissioner Harvinder Singh reported that Guldanda saw over 2,000 visitors within hours of the highway’s reopening in January, underscoring the region’s growing popularity.

Tourists have been effusive in their praise. “Bhaderwah is a hidden treasure. The landscapes and hospitality are unforgettable,” said Riya Gupta, a first-time visitor from Mumbai. The town’s selection by the World Bank as one of four Jammu and Kashmir destinations for development into an international tourism hub further signals its bright future.

However, challenges persist. Recent security operations in Doda’s forested areas, including Bhaderwah, have sparked concerns. Authorities have responded swiftly, with increased surveillance and community engagement to ensure safety. “We are committed to maintaining peace and making Bhaderwah a safe haven for tourists,” said Senior Superintendent of Police Sandeep Mehta.

As Bhaderwah continues to enchant visitors with its natural splendour and warm hospitality, it is poised to emerge as a jewel in India’s tourism landscape, offering an unforgettable escape into nature’s embrace.
