Baramulla leads as Jammu & Kashmir dominates India’s apple production

Srinagar, March 12, 2025 – Jammu & Kashmir, responsible for approximately three-fourths of India’s apple output, continues to solidify its position as the nation’s apple basket, with Baramulla emerging as the top-producing district. According to recent agricultural data, the region’s apple industry thrives across several key districts, contributing significantly to both local and national economies.

Baramulla tops the list, accounting for 23.9% of the region’s apple production, followed by Shopian at 12.8% and Anantnag at 12.7%. Other notable contributors include Kupwara (11.0%), Kulgam (10.3%), Pulwama (10.2%), and Budgam (8.8%). Ganderbal, with 4.1%, and a collective “Others” category at 6.2%, round out the distribution. These figures highlight the concentrated efforts in Kashmir’s northern and southern districts, where favorable climate and terrain support robust apple cultivation.

The data underscores Jammu & Kashmir’s critical role in India’s horticulture sector, producing millions of metric tonnes annually. Apples remain a cornerstone of the region’s economy, supporting livelihoods for countless farmers and driving export markets. Experts note that Baramulla’s lead may be attributed to its expansive orchards and established infrastructure, though districts like Shopian and Anantnag remain vital players.

While the region celebrates its agricultural prowess, challenges such as market access, storage capacity, and competition from imported apples persist. Local stakeholders continue to advocate for enhanced support to maintain Jammu & Kashmir’s dominance in this sector.
