Shopian, November 2,2025: In an unusual and visually striking phenomenon, apple trees across parts of Kashmir, especially in Shopian district, are blooming in November, a time when orchards are typically preparing for winter dormancy.
Farmers and locals have been surprised to see fresh blossoms emerging amid autumn leaves, turning the landscape into an uncanny mix of two seasons. While the sight may appear enchanting, experts warn it is a worrying sign of climate imbalance.
According to horticulture scientists, the rise in day temperatures, followed by sudden fluctuations in weather, has confused the natural growth cycle of apple trees, triggering a second round of flowering. “This is not normal. Such untimely blooming can severely affect next year’s fruit yield,” said a horticulture expert from SKUAST-K.
Farmers fear that the premature blooming could disrupt pollination cycles and weaken the trees before winter, reducing productivity in the coming season. “We’ve never seen this before. The weather has become unpredictable, and the trees are reacting strangely,” said Ghulam Rasool, an orchardist from Shopian.
Environmentalists believe the incident underlines the growing impact of climate change in Kashmir, urging policymakers to develop adaptive strategies for the region’s climate-sensitive horticulture sector.
Once known for its predictable seasons and ideal conditions for apple farming, the Kashmir Valley is now witnessing shifting weather patterns, with warmer autumns, erratic rains, and shorter winters — all influencing the delicate rhythm of nature.
