Ancient sculpture recovered from Jhelum, preserved

Awantipora, December 30,2025: Police in Awantipora have ensured the safe preservation of an ancient stone sculpture recovered from the River Jhelum at Larkipora, highlighting their prompt action in protecting the region’s cultural heritage.

The artefact, believed to be centuries old, was immediately secured after its discovery and kept under safe custody by Awantipora Police under the direct supervision of the SHO Police Station Awantipora, preventing any damage, theft, or misuse.

Following established procedures, the sculpture has now been formally handed over to a team from the Directorate of Archives, Archaeology & Museums, Jammu & Kashmir for detailed documentation, scientific examination, and conservation.

Crafted from fine stone, the sculpture reflects the rich cultural, artistic, and historical legacy of Jammu and Kashmir, underlining the archaeological significance of the Jhelum river basin. Experts will assess the artefact’s origin, age, and historical context as part of the conservation process.

The timely intervention by the police has been widely appreciated, reinforcing the role of law enforcement agencies in safeguarding archaeological heritage and historical artefacts in the Union Territory.
