Srinagar, April 24, 2025 – Following the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26, mostly tourists, the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister convened an all-party meeting at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre in Srinagar. Leaders from major parties, MPs from Jammu and Kashmir, and the Leader of Opposition in the J&K Assembly gathered at 3:00 PM to address the crisis and strategise on restoring peace and justice. The attack, executed by a terrorist group, in Baisaran meadow on April 22, 2025, ranks among the deadliest in the Valley since the 2019 Pulwama strike. The Chief Minister called for united condemnation and collective action against terrorism. Discussions centre on the deteriorating security situation, counter-terrorism measures, and support for victims’ families. The attack drew condemnation from global leaders, including the US, Russian, and Israeli heads of state.
The Prime Minister, cutting short a foreign visit, vowed to punish the perpetrators, while India suspended a key water treaty and downgraded ties with Pakistan. A separate all-party meeting in New Delhi, chaired by the Defence Minister, is set for 6:00 PM to brief leaders on further actions. The Home Minister visited the attack site, and the External Affairs Minister is addressing diplomatic measures. The Congress party held an emergency meeting, with its Leader of Opposition, back from abroad, urging resource mobilisation against terrorists. The attack has devastated J&K’s tourism, with cancellations surging, especially in eastern India.
The J&K government announced Rs 10 lakh for deceased victims’ families, Rs 2 lakh for the seriously injured, and Rs 1 lakh for minor injuries. Locals who aided victims were praised for their bravery. India’s diplomatic response includes expelling Pakistani military diplomats and closing a key transit post, while Pakistan, dismissing the attack as a “false flag,” is holding a security meeting. The SKICC meeting’s outcomes are expected to shape India’s security and diplomatic policies.
