Jammu, June 27,2026- The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jammu has achieved a significant milestone in the field of oncology by successfully performing Jammu and Kashmir’s first Vulvar Cancer Brachytherapy, offering advanced and highly specialised cancer treatment within the Union Territory.
The landmark procedure marks a major advancement in the region’s healthcare infrastructure, enabling patients diagnosed with rare gynaecological cancers to access world-class treatment without the need to travel outside Jammu and Kashmir.
Brachytherapy is a specialised form of internal radiation therapy in which radioactive sources are placed directly inside or near the tumour. This targeted approach allows doctors to deliver high doses of radiation to cancerous tissues while minimising exposure to surrounding healthy organs, improving treatment outcomes and reducing side effects.
The successful procedure was carried out by the Department of Radiation Oncology at AIIMS Jammu through a multidisciplinary team of oncologists, medical physicists, anaesthesiologists, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals. Their coordinated efforts ensured the safe and effective delivery of this complex treatment.
Medical experts at AIIMS Jammu said the achievement reflects the institute’s growing capabilities in advanced cancer care and its commitment to providing cutting-edge medical services to patients across Jammu and Kashmir and neighbouring regions.
The introduction of Vulvar Cancer Brachytherapy is expected to benefit women suffering from rare gynaecological malignancies by providing timely, specialised treatment closer to home, reducing both financial burden and the stress associated with travelling to distant medical centres.
This milestone further strengthens AIIMS Jammu’s position as a leading tertiary healthcare institution and highlights its continued efforts to expand access to advanced oncology services in the region.
