SRINAGAR, April 16, 2025: The proposed Srinagar–Pahalgam road via Tral–Khrew has been hailed as a transformative project for South Kashmir, promising to boost economic growth, tourism, and regional connectivity. Highlighted in a recent editorial by Kashmir Observer, the initiative is seen as a “golden opportunity to reimagine growth in South Kashmir,” addressing long-standing infrastructure gaps in the region.
The new route, bypassing the congested traditional Srinagar–Pahalgam corridor, will connect key towns like Tral and Khrew, unlocking their economic potential. South Kashmir, known for its scenic beauty and cultural heritage, is a hub for tourism, with Pahalgam drawing thousands of visitors annually. However, poor road connectivity has hindered access to lesser-known areas like Tral, a region rich in apple orchards and historical significance, and Khrew, noted for its cement industry and saffron fields.
Local leaders and economists view the project as a catalyst for inclusive development. “This road will not only ease travel to Pahalgam but also open up Tral and Khrew for trade, tourism, and investment,” said a senior official from the Jammu and Kashmir Public Works Department. The route is expected to reduce travel time, improve access to markets, and create job opportunities in agriculture, handicrafts, and hospitality.
The initiative aligns with the National Conference-led government’s focus on infrastructure and economic revitalization. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has prioritized connectivity projects to integrate remote areas into J&K’s growth story, as seen in recent healthcare advancements like the e-SeHAT App launch. The road project also complements efforts to promote sustainable tourism, with plans for eco-friendly rest stops and local craft markets along the route.
Residents of Tral and Khrew have expressed optimism, with community leaders noting that improved connectivity could curb urban migration by fostering local employment. However, concerns about environmental impact and land acquisition remain, with authorities assuring transparent consultations and eco-sensitive planning.
The Srinagar–Pahalgam road via Tral–Khrew is poised to redefine South Kashmir’s economic landscape, leveraging its natural and cultural assets. As feasibility studies progress, stakeholders are urged to collaborate to ensure the project delivers equitable and sustainable growth for the region.
