AI-Powered Drone: A New Era for Horticulture in Kashmir

Three young innovators from Awantipora in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district have developed an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered agricultural drone to make farming and horticulture safer, smarter, and more efficient. The innovators, Nouman Ijaz Bhat, Syed Arsalan Qazmi, and Naveed Ahmad Dar, developed the drone to address the challenges associated with traditional pesticide spraying, particularly in high-density apple orchards. The drone uses AI technology to identify areas affected by pests and diseases and spray pesticides precisely where needed. This targeted approach can help reduce chemical wastage, lower spraying costs, and improve efficiency. It also aims to minimise farmers’ direct exposure to harmful pesticides, reducing potential health risks. Equipped with a 10-litre tank and a GPS-based navigation system, the drone can follow pre-planned routes to spray designated areas. Its precision spraying capability could prove particularly beneficial for orchard owners in Kashmir, where horticulture plays an important role in the local economy. The project received guidance from Dr. Sajjad Amir Lone and funding support through the SEED initiative. This innovation highlights the growing role of young entrepreneurs in transforming agriculture through modern technology. If proven effective in field conditions, the AI-powered drone could help promote safer, more economical, and sustainable farming practices across Kashmir.
