AI and Robotics: The Future of Farming in Kashmir

Agriculture in Kashmir is moving towards a new era with the introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, and drone technology. These modern innovations have the potential to transform traditional farming by improving productivity and reducing cultivation costs. AI-powered technologies can help farmers detect crop diseases at an early stage, allowing them to take timely action and prevent crop losses. Drones can monitor fields, while robotics can reduce labour-intensive tasks and improve farming efficiency. These technologies can also help minimise pesticide use, reduce input costs, and enhance crop quality. According to experts from Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K), adopting modern technologies could significantly improve the agricultural sector. Affordable machinery and smart farming solutions may particularly benefit small and marginal farmers by reducing production expenses and increasing efficiency. Technology-driven agriculture could also attract the younger generation, including Gen-Z, towards farming by creating new opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship, and employment. Moreover, improved productivity and better-quality crops could strengthen Kashmir’s competitiveness in global markets. However, making these technologies affordable and accessible remains essential for their widespread adoption. With proper training, infrastructure, and financial support, AI and robotics can help modernise Kashmir’s agricultural sector, improve farmers’ livelihoods, and build a more sustainable and profitable future for farming.
