Kashmir Ahead

Udhampur Women Learn Carpet Weaving to Promote Self-Reliance and Preserve Traditional Crafts

Women in Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir, are embracing skill development to become financially independent while preserving the region’s rich handicraft heritage. A carpet-weaving training centre established by the Handicrafts Department in Christian Colony, Ward No. 17, is opening new opportunities for women through traditional weaving techniques. Around 20 women are currently receiving training at the centre, where they are learning carpet weaving and operating traditional looms. The trainees receive a monthly stipend of ₹1,000, providing financial support as they develop their skills. They will also receive diplomas upon successful completion of the course, helping them explore employment and self-employment opportunities. The women have welcomed the initiative, expressing gratitude to the government for providing both practical training and financial assistance. They believe the skills they acquire will enable them to establish weaving units at home, earn an income and train other women in their communities. According to Sonam, Assistant Handicraft Training Officer, the centres aim to preserve traditional crafts such as carpet weaving and blanket-making, which have long been part of the cultural heritage of the district’s hilly areas. The initiative highlights how traditional skills can create modern livelihood opportunities. By empowering women with practical knowledge and encouraging entrepreneurship, the programme is contributing to women’s financial independence while keeping the region’s handicraft traditions alive.
