Kashmir Ahead

LG Manoj Sinha salutes NSG on Raising Day: A formidable force with unwavering commitment

Kashmir , October 16, 2026-Jammu & Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha today extended greetings to the personnel of the National Security Guard (NSG) on the force’s Raising Day, paying rich tribute to its commandos for their valour, dedication, and selfless service to the nation.

In a message shared on X, the Lieutenant Governor described the NSG as a formidable force with an unwavering commitment to national security. He said the country is proud of the courage and sacrifices of its brave soldiers, and extended his best wishes to all members of the force and their families.

A Force Born of Necessity

The NSG was raised in 1984 as a specialised federal contingency force to deal with terrorism and hijacking, at a time when India needed a dedicated unit trained for the most complex and high-risk situations. Popularly known as the “Black Cats” for their black uniforms and swift, silent operations, the force works under the Ministry of Home Affairs. Its personnel are drawn from the Army and the Central Armed Police Forces, then put through some of the most demanding training in the world. Its motto, “Sarvatra Sarvottam Suraksha,” translates to “Best Security Everywhere.”

A Legacy of Courage

Over the decades, NSG commandos have been called upon in moments of national crisis. From early counter-terror operations in Punjab to the 2002 Akshardham temple attack in Gandhinagar, the force has repeatedly shown it can operate under extreme pressure. Its most widely remembered operation was during the 26/11 Mumbai attacks in 2008, when commandos fought through multiple sites to neutralise terrorists and rescue hostages. Several personnel made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. The force was also deployed during the 2016 Pathankot airbase attack.

Beyond live operations, the NSG plays a vital role in protecting high-risk individuals, conducting anti-sabotage checks, and training state police units in counter-terror tactics. Its expertise in bomb disposal and hostage rescue makes it an essential part of India’s security architecture.

Significance for Jammu & Kashmir

For a region that has long faced the challenges of terrorism, the Lieutenant Governor’s message carries special meaning. Jammu & Kashmir has seen the toll of violence, and the security forces, including the NSG, have been central to restoring peace and protecting citizens. The Lieutenant Governor’s acknowledgment reflects the gratitude of a region that understands the value of those who stand guard.

The Strength Behind the Uniform

Greeting the families of NSG personnel was a notable part of the message. Behind every commando on a mission stands a family that bears the long absences, the uncertainty, and the quiet anxiety that come with such service. Their patience and strength are an unseen pillar of the force’s success, and the Lieutenant Governor’s words recognised that shared sacrifice.

Looking Ahead

As threats evolve, from conventional terrorism to cyber-enabled and drone-based challenges, the NSG continues to modernise its training, weaponry, and technology. Its ability to adapt while maintaining a reputation for discipline and precision keeps it among the world’s most respected counter-terror units.

On this Raising Day, the nation remembers those commandos who gave their lives so that others may live in peace. Their courage remains a guiding light for every citizen and every security professional.

The Lieutenant Governor’s message ended on a note of gratitude and goodwill, reaffirming that the country stands firmly behind the men and women who protect it, often without recognition and always without hesitation.
