Kashmir Ahead

Fifteen women in Kulgam get free sewing machines, taking a step towards self-reliance

Kulgam , October 15,2026- Fifteen women at Saheib ITI in Kulgam have received free sewing machines through an initiative by ActionAid Educ Train Foundation and USHA. The initiative is seen as a meaningful step towards financial independence and entrepreneurship for women in the district.

Skills That Now Have Tools

Training alone does not always lead to livelihood. Many women who learn stitching and tailoring never get to use the skill because they cannot afford a machine. By handing over sewing machines free of cost, the initiative closes that gap and lets the beneficiaries begin working without delay.

For these 15 women, the machine is a starting point. It can be used to take stitching orders, mend and alter garments, or set up a small tailoring unit at home, all with minimal investment and without leaving their families or neighbourhoods.

Two Organisations, One Goal

The initiative is a joint effort by ActionAid Educ Train Foundation and USHA, a well-known name in sewing machines across India. When a social development organisation and an established brand work together, the result is often practical support that reaches people who need it most.

Saheib ITI, where the machines were distributed, is an important institution for skill development in Kulgam. Connecting training with tools is what turns a classroom skill into a source of income.

Why Women’s Earnings Matter

When a woman earns, the benefits extend well beyond her own pocket. She gains confidence and a stronger voice in household decisions, and she is better placed to support her children’s education and her family’s needs. In small towns and villages, one successful woman entrepreneur often inspires many others.

Home-based enterprises also suit families who prefer work that fits around household responsibilities. A sewing machine can become the foundation of a business that grows steadily over time.

A Chapter in the #BadaltaKashmir Story

The initiative has been shared under #BadaltaKashmir, which means “Changing Kashmir.” The hashtag points to a wider shift in the Valley, where women are increasingly taking up entrepreneurship and skill-based work, backed by training institutions, civil society organisations and private partners.

Stories like this one show that change is not only about large projects. Sometimes it begins with a single machine placed in the hands of a woman who is ready to work.

What Can Help Them Go Further

The machines are an important first step, but lasting success will depend on what follows. Guidance on pricing, quality and marketing can help the women build a loyal customer base. Access to small loans or self-help group support can help them expand. Links with local boutiques, schools needing uniforms and community orders can give them steady work.

Local institutions, banks and well-wishers can all play a part in turning these 15 beginnings into sustainable businesses.

Small Number, Big Meaning

Fifteen sewing machines may seem a modest figure, but the impact is measured in lives changed, not units distributed. Each machine represents a woman’s chance to earn with dignity, build savings and plan for the future.

The beneficiaries deserve congratulations, and the organisers and partners deserve appreciation for backing local women. It is hoped that more such initiatives will follow, reaching women across Kashmir who are eager to turn their skills into opportunities.
