NRLM: Empowering Rural Women Through Self-Help Groups and Sustainable Livelihoods

JKRLM is transforming the lives of rural women by helping them build financial independence and sustainable livelihoods through Self-Help Groups (SHGs). For women like those from the Ali Sham group, joining the initiative in 2016 became the beginning of a new journey toward self-reliance. Through the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM), the group received financial support, including a Revolving Fund and additional assistance, which helped its ten members strengthen their savings and start small businesses. Today, these women are turning locally available resources into products and income opportunities. They prepare and market homemade pickles, spices, corn-based products, vegetables, almonds, walnuts, and other local produce. What began with small savings has grown into a source of livelihood and confidence for the entire group. Their message to other women is simple: instead of staying at home and spending time on phones, take the first step toward doing something productive. A business does not have to begin with a large investment. Even starting with ₹10,000 can be enough to create an opportunity. Through skill development, financial support, and collective action, JKRLM is enabling rural women to become entrepreneurs, strengthen their families, and contribute to the local economy.
