Silk Growers Get 76 New Rearing Sheds in Udhampur

The Sericulture Department has taken a significant step to strengthen silk production and support the livelihoods of farmers in Udhampur by constructing 76 new cocoon rearing sheds. Of these, 26 sheds have been constructed under the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP), while 50 sheds have been provided under the Silk Samagra scheme. Each standardized rearing shed has been constructed at a cost of ₹1.75 lakh, providing farmers with improved facilities to rear silkworms in a more organized and productive environment. Along with the sheds, beneficiaries are also being supported with free mulberry saplings and maintenance assistance, helping them develop sustainable sericulture practices. For many beneficiaries, sericulture has become an additional source of income alongside farming, studies and other occupations. The availability of proper rearing infrastructure is expected to improve cocoon quality, productivity and earning opportunities. The initiative also encourages women and unemployed youth to take up sericulture as a livelihood activity. With government support, farmers can benefit from improved infrastructure while contributing to the growth of the local silk industry. The programme reflects continued efforts to promote skill-based livelihoods, strengthen rural economies and increase income opportunities for farming communities in Udhampur.
