Historic Foundation Stone Laid for Reconstruction of Mata Mahakali Asthapan in Tral

A historic foundation stone has been laid for the reconstruction and restoration of the Mata Mahakali Asthapan at Kausar Band, Tral, marking an important step towards preserving the region’s cultural and religious heritage. The historic Asthapan, associated with the Kashmiri Pandit community, had remained in a neglected condition for several decades due to changing circumstances and the absence of regular human activity at the site. The restoration is being undertaken under a Central heritage conservation programme. The Archaeology Department has sanctioned the restoration project, with the Detailed Project Report (DPR) prepared and the tendering process initiated for the reconstruction and revival of the historic site. Members of the Kashmiri Pandit community who travelled from Jammu participated in a puja at the Asthapan on the occasion of the foundation stone ceremony. The event also saw participation from members of the local Muslim community, who extended their support to the restoration initiative. Local speakers recalled the longstanding bonds shared between Kashmiri Pandit and Muslim families in Tral, describing the occasion as an opportunity for former neighbours and friends to come together after several decades. The gathering highlighted the importance of preserving historic religious sites and protecting the region’s shared cultural heritage. The participation of members from both communities added significance to the occasion, reflecting community support for the revival of an important heritage site. The reconstruction of Mata Mahakali Asthapan is expected to contribute to the preservation of Tral’s historical and cultural legacy and help reconnect future generations with its rich heritage.
