The Rural Development Department, Pulwama, organised a cricket match under the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign with the aim of spreading awareness about cleanliness, sanitation and community participation. The initiative used sport as an effective platform to engage citizens, particularly young people, and encourage them to take greater responsibility for maintaining clean and healthy surroundings. The cricket match was inaugurated by Assistant Commissioner Panchayat, Pulwama, G.H. Rasool Mir, and Assistant Commissioner Development, Pulwama, Hilal Arfat. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from players, officials and local youth, reflecting the community’s active engagement with the cleanliness campaign. Speaking on the occasion, the officers highlighted the importance of maintaining cleanliness in villages, streets, public spaces and government institutions. They encouraged citizens to actively participate in sanitation initiatives and make cleanliness a regular part of their daily lives rather than limiting it to specific campaigns. The speakers also drew a connection between cricket and cleanliness. Cricket promotes discipline, teamwork, collective effort and responsibility, values that are equally important for creating cleaner communities. Just as success on the cricket field depends on coordinated efforts, maintaining a clean environment requires the participation and cooperation of every citizen. The Swachhata Hi Seva campaign seeks to generate greater public awareness about cleanliness and motivate people to contribute towards sanitation efforts. Citizens were encouraged to keep their homes and surroundings clean, while also taking responsibility for public spaces in their communities. The importance of reducing the use of single-use plastic was also highlighted. Responsible waste management and proper segregation of waste at the source were identified as essential steps towards creating sustainable communities. Proper segregation can help recover recyclable and reusable materials and reduce the amount of waste reaching disposal sites. The organisers stated that sporting activities provide an effective platform to connect with the younger generation and communicate important social messages. By combining sports with awareness activities, the initiative sought to inspire youth to become active participants in cleanliness and sanitation efforts. A clean environment is closely linked with a healthy and sustainable way of life. Clean villages and public spaces can contribute to better hygiene and improved community well-being. The initiative in Pulwama therefore highlighted that cleanliness is not the responsibility of a single department but a collective responsibility shared by citizens, institutions and communities. The Rural Development Department reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cleanliness and sanitation efforts across Pulwama. Citizens were urged to contribute actively to these initiatives and adopt responsible practices in their everyday lives. The cricket match ultimately served as more than a sporting event. It provided an opportunity to bring people together, promote teamwork and reinforce the message that collective action, discipline and individual responsibility are essential for building cleaner, healthier and more sustainable communities.
