Baltal, July 8,2026- The annual Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra continues to serve as a major source of livelihood for thousands of pony handlers in Kashmir, providing seasonal employment while supporting the smooth movement of pilgrims along the challenging mountain routes to the holy cave shrine.
With lakhs of devotees expected to undertake the pilgrimage this year, pony handlers remain an integral part of the yatra, assisting elderly pilgrims, children, and those unable to complete the trek on foot. The pilgrimage generates significant economic opportunities for local communities, benefiting pony owners, porters, shopkeepers, transport operators, and other service providers.
Speaking at Baltal, a pony handler expressed satisfaction with the improvements made to the pilgrimage infrastructure over the years.
“Earlier, the roads were in very poor condition, but now they have improved significantly. The routes are much better, and facilities such as drinking water and electricity are available. Overall, the arrangements here are very good,” he said.
The pony handler noted that enhanced infrastructure and better amenities have not only improved the experience for pilgrims but have also made working conditions safer and more convenient for those who depend on the annual yatra for their livelihood.
Authorities have undertaken extensive preparations for the pilgrimage by upgrading trekking routes, ensuring the availability of clean drinking water, strengthening electricity supply, improving sanitation facilities, and deploying medical teams and emergency response units along both the Baltal and Pahalgam routes.
The annual Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra remains one of Jammu and Kashmir’s most significant religious events, while also playing a crucial role in sustaining the local economy. Every year, the pilgrimage provides employment and business opportunities to thousands of residents, reinforcing the strong connection between faith, tourism, and economic development in the region.
