Kashmir,May 20,2026- In an era of modern appliances and plastic products, a 75-year-old potter from Udhampur is preserving the timeless tradition of pottery through handcrafted clay pots and earthen utensils. As rising temperatures push people toward natural cooling methods, veteran artisan Tarseem Lal is witnessing renewed demand for traditional clay water pots and eco-friendly pottery.
For decades, Tarseem Lal has shaped clay into water pots, utensils and household items using traditional techniques passed down through generations. Although steel and plastic products once reduced the popularity of earthenware, growing awareness about sustainable living and support for local artisans under the “Vocal for Local” movement have helped revive interest in traditional pottery.
Clay pots are increasingly being preferred for their natural cooling properties during the summer season. Many households are once again choosing earthen pots to store drinking water, appreciating their eco-friendly nature and traditional value.
For Tarseem Lal, pottery is more than a livelihood — it represents heritage, sustainability and self-reliance. Despite his age, he continues to work passionately, hoping the younger generation will carry forward the craft and preserve this cultural tradition.
Residents and customers have praised the artisan’s dedication, saying that supporting local potters not only protects traditional craftsmanship but also promotes environmentally friendly lifestyles. The revival of clay products is also creating new opportunities for rural artisans and small-scale craftsmen in the region.
