Reasi, May 16,2026- Beekeeping is emerging as a sustainable source of income and self-employment in Reasi district, with several farmers and unemployed youth benefiting from government-backed apiculture schemes aimed at strengthening rural livelihoods.
Under centrally sponsored programmes, beneficiaries are receiving subsidies of up to 80 percent for establishing beekeeping units, encouraging more people to adopt apiculture as an alternative livelihood option. District Incharge Apiculture Officer Shiv Parshotam Jyoti said that 31 beekeeping units have been established across the district so far. He stated that the scheme is helping generate employment opportunities, especially for rural youth and small farmers seeking additional sources of income.
According to officials, the growing interest in beekeeping is contributing to economic empowerment in remote villages by enabling families to earn through honey production and related products. The department is also providing technical guidance and training to beneficiaries to ensure better productivity and long-term sustainability.
Beneficiary Priti Raina from Jehdi village appreciated the government initiative and said the scheme has significantly improved the economic condition of rural households. She noted that beekeeping has opened new avenues of self-reliance and encouraged more women and youth to participate in income-generating activities.
Officials said that apiculture is proving beneficial not only for honey production but also for improving crop pollination and supporting biodiversity. The administration is encouraging more villagers to take advantage of the subsidy-based schemes to strengthen rural livelihoods and boost the local economy.
