Doda, May 8,2026- The Rural Self Employment Training Institute in Doda is playing a significant role in reducing rural unemployment by providing free skill-based training programmes aimed at promoting self-employment among youth and women.
The institute, a joint initiative of the Ministry of Rural Development and the State Bank of India offers short-term residential courses ranging from six days to six weeks in multiple trades, including agriculture, dairy farming, poultry, tailoring, beauty parlour management, mobile repairing, computer hardware, and other small business activities.
Beneficiaries undergoing training at the institute appreciated the government initiative and highlighted the facilities being provided during the course period.
One trainee said, “This is a very good scheme. We have been here for 10 days and have learnt many things. We have hostel facilities, food, and all other arrangements here.”
Another beneficiary undergoing tailoring training said the programme is helping participants become financially independent. “We are being taught tailoring, cutting, and sewing. Everything, including food and shelter, is provided free of cost by the government. This training will help us start our own shop and improve employment opportunities,” the trainee said.
A trainer at the institute explained that the tailoring course runs for 31 days and includes practical as well as theoretical learning. “The trainees are first introduced to the basics, followed by sewing techniques, measurement methods, fabric knowledge, and the use of different needles for different types of cloth,” the trainer said.
Officials said the institute aims to strengthen rural livelihoods by equipping participants with practical skills that can help them start small businesses and become self-reliant.
The initiative is also contributing towards women empowerment and entrepreneurship development in remote areas of Jammu and Kashmir by creating opportunities for sustainable income generation.
