Kashmir University student revives traditional Waggu craft, sparks new hope for cultural preservation in J&K

Srinagar, April 24, 2026- In an inspiring example of youth-led cultural preservation, a student from University of Kashmir has taken significant steps to revive the traditional Waggu craft of Kashmir, breathing new life into a fading art form.

Waggu craft, once an integral part of Kashmir’s rich artisanal heritage, had gradually declined over the years due to changing lifestyles, lack of market access, and diminishing interest among younger generations. Recognizing the urgent need to preserve this unique tradition, the student initiated efforts to document, practice, and promote the craft among local communities.

Through dedicated research and hands-on engagement with skilled artisans, the student has not only learned the intricate techniques involved in Waggu making but also introduced innovative designs to make the craft more appealing to modern consumers. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between tradition and contemporary demand, ensuring sustainability for local artisans.

Speaking about the effort, sources said the revival project also focuses on creating awareness through workshops, exhibitions, and social media outreach, encouraging youth participation in preserving cultural heritage. The student has been actively collaborating with craftsmen to improve product quality and expand market reach.

Experts believe that such grassroots initiatives can play a vital role in safeguarding Kashmir’s traditional crafts, many of which are at risk of extinction. The effort aligns with broader initiatives aimed at promoting handicrafts and boosting employment opportunities in the region.

Officials in Jammu and Kashmir have also been encouraging youth-driven innovation in the handicrafts sector, recognizing its potential to contribute to both cultural preservation and economic growth.

The revival of Waggu craft by the KU student stands as a testament to the power of individual initiative in preserving heritage. It highlights how young minds can become custodians of tradition while adapting it to contemporary relevance.
