5.9 Magnitude Afghanistan quake felt across Jammu & Kashmir

Kashmir, April 4, 2026-A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck the Afghanistan–Tajikistan border region on Friday, sending tremors across several parts of Jammu and Kashmir and triggering brief panic among residents.

According to initial data released by the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, the earthquake occurred at 16:12:58 UTC at a considerable depth of 175 kilometers, indicating a deep-focus seismic event. The epicenter was located at coordinates 36.52°N latitude and 71.01°E longitude.

Residents in multiple areas of Jammu and Kashmir reported feeling mild to moderate tremors, prompting many to rush out of their homes and workplaces as a precautionary measure. However, the tremors subsided quickly.

Officials confirmed that no immediate reports of major damage or casualties have been received so far. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and assessing any potential impact in vulnerable areas.

Earthquakes originating in the Afghanistan-Tajikistan region are often felt across northern parts of India, including Jammu and Kashmir, due to the region’s seismic sensitivity.
