Ganderbal hosts financial literacy drive for seniors

Ganderbal, March 18,2026-The Department of Social Welfare Ganderbal on Wednesday organized a mega awareness programme at Government Secondary School Wakura to promote financial literacy among senior citizens of the area.

The programme witnessed active participation from elderly residents, local representatives, and officials from the Social Welfare Department, who highlighted the importance of financial awareness in ensuring security and independence during old age.

Focus on Financial Awareness and Security
During the session, experts and officials educated participants on various aspects of financial management, including safe banking practices, pension schemes, digital transactions, and protection against fraud. Emphasis was laid on helping senior citizens understand government welfare schemes and how to access benefits without intermediaries.

Officials also provided detailed information about social security initiatives such as old-age pensions, financial assistance schemes, and the importance of linking bank accounts with Aadhaar for seamless transactions.

Encouraging Digital Inclusion
Special focus was given to digital financial tools, with demonstrations on using ATMs, mobile banking, and online payment platforms. Participants were encouraged to adopt digital methods while also being cautious about cyber fraud and scams.

Speakers stressed that financial literacy empowers senior citizens to manage their finances independently and reduces their vulnerability to exploitation.
