Kashmir Ahead

Eid rush peaks as Kashmir valley markets buzz with shoppers

Srinagar, March 18,2026- As Eid-ul-Fitr approaches, markets across the Kashmir Valley are buzzing with activity, witnessing a sharp surge in shoppers eager to complete their festive purchases. After a relatively slow start to the season, the past few days have brought renewed energy to marketplaces, with people thronging shops well into the evening hours.

In major hubs like Lal Chowk, Residency Road, and Anantnag town, shopkeepers report a steady increase in footfall as families step out for traditional Eid shopping. Markets are adorned with colourful banners, new arrivals, and “Eid Sale” offers, creating a festive atmosphere across the Valley.

Shoppers can be seen purchasing garments, footwear, cosmetics, and household items, while bakeries and confectionery stores are also witnessing brisk sales as people prepare for the celebrations. “We wait for this time every year. Shopping with family before Eid is part of our tradition,” said a local shopper in Srinagar.

Discounts Drive Footfall

Traders say attractive discounts and special offers have played a key role in drawing customers back to markets. Many retailers have introduced price cuts on clothing and accessories to boost sales, especially after an initially dull business period.

“We had a slow beginning this season, but now the rush has picked up. Evening hours are particularly busy,” said a shopkeeper at Residency Road.

Cautious Spending Amid Rising Prices

Despite the visible rush, traders note that customers are spending cautiously. Rising prices of garments and daily essentials have impacted purchasing power, with many buyers focusing on necessary items rather than luxury purchases.

“People are coming in good numbers, but they are selective. Most are buying essentials for Eid,” said another trader.

Festive Spirit Returns

Even with economic concerns, the festive spirit remains intact. Streets lit up with decorations, crowded marketplaces, and families shopping together reflect the cultural significance of Eid in the Valley.

Traders are hopeful that last-minute shopping in the coming days will further boost sales and help recover earlier losses.
