Srinagar, March 7,2026- A strong Western Disturbance is expected to affect Jammu and Kashmir from the night of March 9 to March 12, bringing widespread rain, snowfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across the Union Territory. The weather system is likely to trigger moderate to heavy precipitation in the plains and heavy snowfall in higher reaches, prompting authorities to remain on alert.
According to weather forecasts, the Kashmir plains are expected to witness moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds during the active phase of the system. North Kashmir districts, including Kupwara, Bandipora, and Baramulla, may experience relatively higher rainfall intensity compared to other areas.
The peak weather activity is expected during the evenings of March 10 and March 12, when intense rain showers, lightning, and strong winds could impact normal life in several districts.
Meanwhile, the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir are likely to receive heavy snowfall during the period. Areas expected to witness significant snow accumulation include Sonamarg–Zojila axis, Sinthan Top–Peer Ki Gali, Razdan Top–Sadhna Top, and the Gurez Valley. Other mountainous regions across the Pir Panjal and Greater Himalayan ranges are also likely to receive fresh snowfall.
The fresh snowfall may lead to temporary disruption of traffic along high-altitude passes, while rainfall in the plains could cause waterlogging and reduced visibility during thunderstorms.
Authorities have advised travelers and residents in vulnerable areas to stay updated with weather advisories, particularly those planning to move through mountain passes and remote regions during the forecast period.
Farmers and orchardists have also been urged to take precautionary measures to protect crops and orchards, as strong winds and heavy rain could affect agricultural activities.
Despite the potential disruptions, the precipitation is expected to improve water availability and replenish snow reserves, which are crucial for rivers, agriculture, and hydropower generation in the region.
